Each tradition has its own variation and differences in the style of application.
However each style is based on the understanding that certain points on the surface of the body allow a practitioner to influence the health and wellbeing of the patient.
Modern research has demonstrated many of the real effects of stimulation of these points. They have been shown to stimulate the higher brain, affect the autonomic nervous system, change blood chemistry, hormonal activity and alter the electrical activity of tissues.
The points themselves can be stimulated in a variety of ways and this is seen in using massage, heat, laser or electrical stimulation of the points. The term acupuncture however really refers to the placement of fine needles into the points.
While modern research is of great value, clinical treatment is still best guided by time proven traditional theories and practices. In particular the concept of channels or meridians on which the acupuncture points fall.
These meridians are understood to allow for the flow of a form of vital energy known as Qi (pronounced as “chee”). Qi has several effects:

  • Qi promotes movement – all body activity and motion is the result of Qi.
  • Qi warms the body
  • Qi protects the body
  • Qi holds things in their correct place.
  • Qi transforms substances within the body.

These Acupuncture meridians travel along the body and connect to the internal organs. When acupuncture is performed the practitioner influences the flow of Qi through the meridians and effects the internal organs.
By acting on the Qi acupuncture promotes natural healing. It enhances your recuperative power and immunity, improves your physical and emotional health, and improves overall function and well-being.
